The right number of strap for metal coils OD and ID

Steel service centers that slit coil need to safely band steel coils.  The OD band is put on with a pusher style tool (or automatic machine) for two purposes.  It keeps the coil tight, and pulls down the tab.  It allows the coils to be moved away from the recoiler (so the line can keep running).

For non-high strength steel, 1 1/4″ x .029″ (or .025″, .031″) is the standard OD band.  For 15″ and under, just one band should do it.  For larger coils, and for thick material (over .177″) more bands are needed.

Coils that get laid down, eye to the sky, and travel down a packaging line will get ID bands applied.
